Active Meditation

Dance

There is an old African Proverb that says When You Pray Move Your Feet. I couldn’t agree more.

My path revolves around rhythm, vibrations and movement. Before a ritual I like to dance myself loose.

Maybe I’ll share a session via visual media here one day, if I can get up the nerve.

danceMy routine is a combination of Indian, and Modern Dance with yogic intent. What is yogic intent? I become aware of my body and soon my kinks make themselves known and with yogic intent I conform my moves to stretch and loosen my kinky muscles. I concentrate on the spine home to the Kundalini Shakti, which I’ll save for another post. Visualizing and Moving around my Center.

When dancing the music is the base from which my body’s rhythms are awakened. The most rewarding sessions I have experienced feel as though the music is but a mere echo of my own rhythm.

DanceWhen choosing your soundtrack for your active meditation I would recommend sticking with instrumental music. You don’t have to choose “New Age” music to have a successful session. There are many genres that have produced great results.

If you have worked with chanting, there are some great chant music that is suitable to dance to. I would be conscious of how the chanting feels to you. I have “found” some powerful mantras just by choosing chants that resonated with me. With chant music, the emphasis is on the chant’s vibrational quality more than beat. I’ll definitely go into chants more in detail in a future post.

It is best to choose a time when you are least likely to be disturbed. With that said, if you are a parent of small children, like myself, you must remain flexible in your ritual and meditative work. My children often join in and I have learned that by going with the flow the rewards [though not intended] have a great value, nonetheless.

DanceParents you must involve your children in your life. If you meditate, chant, pray, dance, conduct or participate in rituals, do so with your children. Our children are humanity’s immortality. It is a parent’s duty and highest responsibility to offer our children viable paths until they are able to lead the way themselves.

What makes a successful active meditation session?

You should feel both relaxed, rejuvenated and energized at the same time. Your body should feel well stretched and in no way strained. If you hurt, you tried too hard. You will experience a connection of your wisdom body to your physical body. The key is to let go and let the rhythm take control.
