Old School Friday Music Meme : Catch Up

Been a bit absent as of late with many happenings in the Vyas household over the past weeks. So I submit my Old School Friday Music Meme catch up.

The theme for Friday, May 2nd was Singers We Want to be Like. I will take this one on by highlighting attributes that for me make a singer an artist, cuz that’s what I wanna be. Artists stretch our perceptions to include a new view. A vocal artist is blessed with range. Range of thought and range of voice.

Here are a few artists with that range.

Bjork: Human Behavior
Bjork’s range reflects her heritage which lies in Iceland. I can feel that Iceland is a land of extremes, therein lies a silence that is palpable and an internal heat that lies within her core.

Bobby McFerrin: Opportunity
Bobby McFerrin has such a grasp of the breath|voice connection. I have always played with vocal sounds as a child and now with my children. Humans have been blessed with the complexities of vocal possibilities and McFerrin surely shows a command of those possibilities.

Another important attribute that makes a singer an artists is the ability to be a story teller. Stories enrich our lives by attempting to show all sides of the human condition.

Woody Guthrie: Jesus Christ

The theme for Friday, May 9th was Movie Soundtracks.

The movie adaption of Alice Walker’s The Color Purple is perhaps the movie I have rewatched the most. If you haven’t seen it, shame on you. I highly recommend this amazing story.

Maybe God is Trying to Tell You Something

Miss Celie’s Blues | Sister

The theme for Friday, May 16th was Remakes

I give you the wondrous Nina Simone once more.

Here Comes the Sun originally performed by The Beatles

Don’t let me be Misunderstood originally performed by Nina Simone

and was remade by The Animals

This week’s theme is Best Guitar|Bass Solos

I give you Parliament Funkadelic’s Maggot Brain

    You are certainly caught up.

I love Bjork and all her eccentricities, Bobby McFerrin is better live isn’t he. I would love to see him perform one day, soon I hope, but I haven’t heard anything about him lately.

Woody Guthrie is some of the best political music ever written.

Miss Celie’s Blues is in my ipod. I love that song to death.

I’m not familiar with Nina Simone’s remake or the Animals. I love the Beatles, and so I will have to add these versions to my list of downloads.

Last, but not least you and Marvalus One picked the same song for best bass/guitar solo.

    @Mrs. Grapevine,
It surely seems like we have similar taste in music, yeah.

It is so funny M commented before I updated the post and I saw when I traveled along the OSF highway that great minds think alike.

I would love to see Bobby McFerrin live, what an experience that would be.

    Much love

Thanks for the introduction to an extraordinary woman, Nina Simone. I enjoyed reading about her life [on the Internet], and listening to her version of a Beatle’s classic.
